1780 Lakota Sioux Indian Pipe Axe Tomahawk Forged Head Gun Barrel From Wyoming

Original old forged iron trade pipe axe tomahawk. The head is a beautifully forged gun barrel and has a nice blacksmith's curl under the blade. The ash wood haft is original to the head.

It's an extra long haft, about 24 inches long. The wood has a nice heavy and dark patina. The rings of the wood can be seen on the ends. The handle has been well used and has good wear on it. One shoulder on the haft, containing a hole for attaching a beaded drop or beads or horsehair.

A good patina on the surface of the head. Good old lap weld on the neck of the blade remaining from the joining of a tempered bit folded into the head. The pipe bowl is a long unusual one.

Rifling grooves are in the bowl, gun barrel remains partially intact for the bowl. Tomahawks like this were hand forged by blacksmiths for trade to trappers, traders, and Native Americans. The blade is a large classic style with small curl hook under the blade. The purpose of this curl was to aid the warrior in battle. The enemies blade could be caught on the curl and then disarmed.

You can spot a small leather gasket fitting between the head and the haft. Concentric rings are on the haft in the eye. Brass tacks original to the period.

This tomahawk needs to be displayed and cherished for future generations to see and appreciate! 24" haft 9.5" head length. No reasonable offer will be refused. The item "1780 Lakota Sioux Indian Pipe Axe Tomahawk Forged Head Gun Barrel From Wyoming" is in sale since Sunday, February 2, 2020.
